ABOUT ETIEYIBO

Meet Etieyibo

I am a Professor of Philosophy at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, and an adjunct professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Alberta, Canada. Before joining the University of the Witwatersrand in January of 2012 I had previously taught both at the University of Alberta and Athabasca University.

My roots are in Delta State (formerly Bendel State), Nigeria and had my primary and secondary education in Sapele. I have a BA (with first class honours) in philosophy (minor in English and English Literature), an MA (with distinction) in philosophy, and an MBA –– all from the University of Lagos. I also have an LLB from the University of South Africa and a PhD from the University of Alberta. My PhD dissertation was on David Gauthier’s Moral Contractarianism and the Problem of Secession, which presents a critical examination of Gauthier’s account of morality that links rationality with preferences explained by expected utility.

I am currently the Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of the Witwatersrand and Secretary of the African Philosophy Society (https://africanphilosophysociety.org/).
